Star Trek TV Series Coming To A Galaxy Near You!

A new Star Trek television series is being developed and could be on your screen by January 2017 when the cult show celebrates its 50th anniversary, producers announced.

Producer Alex Kurtzman, who rebooted the movie franchise, is in charge of the TV effort and is searching for a writer the cult hit, the Hollywood Reporter said.

"The new series will blast off with a special preview broadcast on the CBS Television Network," the announcement said. The premiere episode and all subsequent first-run episodes will then be available exclusively in the United States on CBS All Access, the Network's digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service."

The original series debuted Sept. 8, 1966 and only lasted 3 seasons and 79 episodes. But it was huge in syndication and later on the big screen starting in 1979.

"The brand-new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966," the release said.

It's had several television incarnations, including The Next Generation (1987-1994), Deep Space Nine (1993-99), Voyager (1995-2001) and Enterprise (2001-05). You may also recall the cartoon version in 1973 to 1974 on TV.

Kurtzman is producing the current Star Trek feature film series and he wrote Star Trek Into Darkness (2013). He has another film scheduled for 2019.
